Decelerating Knee Osteoarthritis
Lecturer: Ben Steele-Turner

SUMMARY
The Masterclass titled “Decelerating Knee Osteoarthritis” by Ben Steele-Turner is designed for physiotherapists managing individuals with or at risk of knee osteoarthritis (OA). The presentation aims to educate on comprehensive, conservative measures to prevent, reduce, or decelerate knee OA progression.
Ben Steele-Turner, a physiotherapist from West Sussex, UK, integrates his expertise in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and human nutrition in this masterclass. He emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between clinical and radiographic OA and outlines the guidelines for diagnosing knee OA from organizations like NICE, ULAS, and the American College of Rheumatology.
The masterclass explores the pathophysiology of knee OA, stressing the importance of early intervention. Key components include understanding the biological, biomechanical, and structural factors that contribute to knee health and OA progression. The presentation highlights the significance of maintaining joint homeostasis, addressing risk factors like obesity, joint injury, and reduced muscle strength, and implementing targeted interventions.
Three core pillars of treatment are emphasized: self-management education, tailored exercise programs, and weight management. Ben underscores the importance of providing patients with a contemporary view of OA, setting realistic goals, and ensuring exercise regimens are progressive and personalized. Additionally, he discusses the role of key nutrients, such as vitamin D, vitamin K, and omega-3 fatty acids, in supporting joint health and decelerating OA progression.
The masterclass also addresses the management of high-risk individuals with a history of knee injury, advocating for early intervention to prevent post-traumatic OA. Ben encourages physiotherapists to engage in primary prevention, thorough rehabilitation, and sensitive discussions about weight management to optimize patient outcomes.
Overall, the masterclass provides a comprehensive framework for physiotherapists to effectively manage and decelerate knee OA, focusing on conservative treatments and lifestyle modifications.
