Description

This course will enable Physical Therapists to gain a practical knowledge of the possible anatomical factors leading to TMJ pain & dysfunctions. The course will review basic Physical Therapy approach to the evaluation and highly effective self-management skills including exercises & mobilizations.

An important note regarding the TMJ all Physical Therapists need to be aware of: Many dentists & physicians are in need of referring their patients with persistent headaches, earaches, and facial pains related to the TMJ to other health care professionals; however they are unaware that some PTscan effectively evaluate and treat the TMJ.

There are great opportunities for PTs to assist their local dentists and help many individuals who suffer from persistent and disabling TMJ conditions. Management includes education on condition, highly effective home exercise programs and gentle mobilizations.

Study Goals

  1. Identify the anatomical structures and functions of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
  2. Recall common signs and symptoms associated with TMJ dysfunction.
  3. Explain the clinical relevance of TMJ dysfunction in relation to headaches, cervical pain, and dizziness.
  4. Describe the theoretical principles behind the physiotherapy evaluation of the TMJ.
  5. Perform a basic clinical assessment of the TMJ, including observation, palpation, and functional testing.
  6. Apply clinical reasoning to determine when TMJ assessment is indicated based on patient symptoms.
  7. Differentiate between TMJ-related symptoms and those originating from other musculoskeletal or neurological sources.
  8. Analyze case scenarios to identify the role of TMJ in complex presentations.
  9. Critically appraise research evidence supporting TMJ assessment and management strategies in physiotherapy.
  10. Justify the inclusion of TMJ evaluation in treatment plans for patients with cervical or craniofacial complaints.
