Description
“…the total financial cost of back pain is about three times greater than the total cost of all forms of cancer diseases…” (Egdon Jonsson in Nachemson 2000)
A systematic analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study concludes that lower back pain (LBP) is the leading global cause of disability in most countries and the incidence is increasing (GBD in Lancet 2016).
Ironically the costs of care and interventions for management of LBP are increasing (Dieleman et al 2016).
What is going on????
This course will offer an unconventional and controversial approach to low back pain – because something MUST change!
Study Goals
- Review the optimal management strategies suggested by the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) for the management of Non-specific low back pain (NSLBP)
- Explain the limitations of the studies that the CPGs are based on
- Analyze various physical and psychosocial risk factors influencing recovery.
- Critically appraise research evidence and question the majority of common assessment and management strategies used in physiotherapy- and how they may be inadvertently enhancing the NOCEBO effect
- Apply clinical reasoning to determine what interventions are indicated based on the unique presentation of each patient.
- Offer a novel approach to optimize recovery for patients presenting with acute and chronic NSLBP – perhaps it’s time we stopped treating PAIN!
